This one is short and sweet!. It is powerful because it is focused only on you and only you.

How do I do it?

You fill in each blank after I AM… with a positive word or small phrase. For example: I AM (STRONG) or I AM (A HARD WORKER). It must relate to and be truthful. It does not work if you just make things up. Be honest with yourself because you are not cheating anyone but you when you aren’t truthful about who you are.

Go Ahead. You try it.
I AM
I AM
I AM
(You can add more if you like. Write as many as you want.)

Once you have filled in your blanks, you must to commit to reading it every morning and night. Imagine hearing those postitive things about yourelf first thing every morning before anyone else spoke to you. I suggest reading it at night as well so you can be positively reminded of who you are before you enter the land of dreams. It allows you to finish your day on a positive note instead of worrying or reflecting on the negative things that may have happened earlier.

This exercise should be done on a small piece of paper. I like to use a cue card so that it fits right in my pocket. That way I have it all day long wherever I go. If you are feeling down or sad about something you can take out your I AM card and be immediately reminded of how amazing you really are. I like to have my athletes do this before a competition or when they are feeling overwhelmed and frustrated.
There is a trick! You have to read it out LOUD! Throughout the day you may be in a place like school, work or even training where you are not comfortable reading out loud so it is okay if you just read it to yourself in those circumstances. Make sure you read it out loud in the morning and at night.

There are a couple more ways that you can make this exercise a little more powerful. Of course these are option but I encourage you to try them.
1. Instead of you reading it to yourself all the time you can have your mom, dad, sibling, or even friend read it to you once and a while. It is not a joke though so make sure you are serious when you do it. Reflect on your answers and remember that YOU came up with them so you must believe it.
2. You can also read it in front of a mirror if you have one so that you are staring yourself in the eye while reading out loud. It may feel embarrassing or silly to read it while staring at yourself in the mirror. You may even be too nervous or shy to read it out loud. The purpose is to help you become a more confident athlete so try your best to find the courage in your heart. Once you are brave enough to try it, you will find yourself having a positive start to each day. This is a great way of learning how to overcome embarrassment about what other people think of you and focus on what YOU think of you.

The more confident you are the more positive your day will be. Positive thoughts lead to a positive attitude which in turn lead to positive training experiences.
